Review of ‘Sing a Rainbow Concert’ 1st July 2023

Concert review ‘Sing a Rainbow’ July 1st 2023

Congratulations to Stour Choral Society on another successful concert. The choir performed a varied program of weather- related songs, exposing the audience to mighty thunder, wind, rain, snow and lots of sunshine. Highlights included a loud and exciting ‘Song of the sou’wester’ (C.V Stanford), a beautiful rendition of Elgar’s ‘The Snow’ and joyful, swinging performances of ‘Bring Me Sunshine’ (Arthur Kent) and ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ (Brown).

Deborah and Harriet Board treated us to a duet of ‘Here Comes the Sun’ (George Harrison) and John Evans pulled out all the stops to perform (actions included) ‘When the Night Wind Howls’ (Gilbert and Sullivan) as a fitting farewell to his 46 years of singing with ‘Stour’.  Yvonne Graham nailed the part of ‘God’ in ‘Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo’ (Flanders & Horovitz)

Special mention goes to Stephen Smith, our Organist, who not only provided realistic and unsettling sound effects of wind, thunder and rain, beautiful strains of violins and a jaunty double bass, but also performed a superb ‘Thunder and Lightning Polka’ (Strauss).

Many thanks also to Ben Steinitz, who’s drumming fully enhanced the drama of the afternoon, and to Peter Humphrey who joined us to play piano, adding beautifully to the accompaniment.

The afternoon finished with the audience joining in with ‘Never walk Alone’ (Rogers and Hammerstein) which was described as ‘powerful’ and ‘emotional’ by audience members.

Congratulations to our Musical Director Susanna Rose, for her endless hard work, positivity and enthusiasm which brings out the best in the choir, including growing our acting and performing skills!

Credit also goes to the ‘behind the scenes’ team without whom the concerts wouldn’t happen.

Our next Concert will be on Saturday 2nd December 2023 when we will be singing Schubert’s ‘Mass in G Major’ and a variety of seasonal music and carols. If you enjoy singing and would like to join us, please come along to a rehearsal. Our next term starts on Monday 18th September, 7.15pm, and we rehearse at ‘The Oak Room’ Acorn Village, Clacton Rd, Mistley, CO11 2NJ.
