Welcome to the Stour Choral Society's Website

The new season begins on Monday 6th September 2010. Anyone interested in becoming a member is encouraged to come along and and sing (details here: OpenEvening). Score reading ability is not vital - you'll soon pick it up!

The Stour Choral Society celebrates nearly forty years of choral singing and aims to provide a stimulating time where good music and friendship co-exist. The Society came to fruition through the joining of two church choirs who had previously performed separately in the area a performance of Stainer's Crucifixion. The first joint concert was held in December 1971 with 65 people singing Part I of the Messiah. From early days local and distinguished soloists supported the Society and conductors such as Laszlo Heltay and John Fear established the choir's good reputation in the area. This was followed some years later by its connections and joint ventures with the Kantorei in Frankenberg, Germany. Performances have been given in local churches and halls in Manningtree, Mistley, Dedham, East Bergholt, Frinton and Clacton.

The Choir

General Information:

The Stour Choral Society rehearses in Manningtree Methodist Church, from 7.30-9:30pm on Mondays.

SCS is a large singing group (SATB) who enjoy performing works from a vast choral repertoire including Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Mass in C minor, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Rutter's Magnificat, as well as lighter classical pieces. There are 50 members in the group at present from not only the immediate area of Manningtree, but from further afield as far as Colchester and Frinton.

The choir would be delighted to hear from you if you are interested in attending a rehearsal to see whether the choir suits you, or if you wish to come to a concert.

Anniversary Celebrations

The Stour Choral Society is approaching its 40th year and, as part of the celebrations, will be putting on a joint concert with its Twin Choir to mark its Quadragennial. SCS would like to invite all former members to this concert to celebrate four decades' worth of music-making. For more information, please see the Anniversary page.

David Shearmur (01206 395263; nandes@tiscali.co.uk) or Duncan Archard (01206 844754; acorn582a@tiscali.co.uk) can both be contacted if you would like more information.
